The free dictionary describes definitions of the word „stage“ as the scene of an event, a period of time in the course of a process or an exhibit or presentation to an audience.
Thus the “stage” can be opened to any kind of art work . In modern theatre presentations the “stage” will no more be a border between a raised platform and the public. The public is rather invited to become a part of the presentation. The same is true for the definition of a modern art that implicitly expects the viewer to become part of the artwork, to complete what is shown with their own expectations, their individual interpretations.
Not only the stage, even the means with which to convey a theatre or dance production and what is conveyed as art approach one another. It could be art videos or painted canvas as stage background; it could be the use of the body within theatre productions or performance art.
Art and theatre productions have left museums and set stages to find public places or alternative spaces. A stage can be an empty house or a space under a tree, it can be a highway. This is especially
true for performance art. A performance is an event in a period of time in the course of a process that might entail several different performances with a beginning and an end to the individual performance. That does not necessarily mean an end to the research, the questions that will arise in the artist and in the viewers. A performance does not need an immediate viewer as long as it will reach its public eventually by means of photography or video. They could be a one to one
presentation of the performance. Video art and photography art can instead be an interactive work between a media artist and a performance artist. The media artist will transform the process of research and questions of the performance artist into a different but related work of art with
questions and research of his or her own. In a different media the “stage” can be invisible. It will materialize in the mind of the viewer when looking at the image, be it a still, a sequence or move like in a video.
